80% of All Calls Involve Medical Response
While calls for service include fires, rescues, and emergency medical responses; a majority of the time our firefighters and paramedics provide critical, life-saving care in the crucial minutes before ambulance crews arrive.
History of the St. Anthony Fire Department
The St. Anthony Fire Department was established in 1956 as an all-volunteer organization made up of 35 dedicated members. At that time, the city’s landscape was largely farms and residential homes, and the department’s primary calls for service were grass and structure fires.
By around 1970, city leaders recognized the need for a more consistent emergency response presence and began transitioning to a full-time staffing model. This model included three to four full-time firefighters on duty, supported by cross-trained personnel from the City’s Public Works and Police Departments. During this period, the department handled approximately 228 calls for service each year.
In the mid-1980s, the staffing model shifted to two firefighters on duty per shift – a structure that remains in place today. Over the years, both the city and its emergency needs have grown significantly. In 2024, the department responded to 1,957 calls for service.
While grass fires still occasionally occur, the St. Anthony Fire Department has evolved into an all-hazards response agency, managing emergencies ranging from medical calls and fires to hazardous materials incidents and vehicle accidents.
The department’s history is deeply rooted in community initiative and growth, and it continues to serve as a proud example of dedication, adaptability, and commitment to public safety in St. Anthony.
